Season Opener 07/08: Community Shield

Community Shield
Manchester United vs Chelsea

"Fergie is going to change his favorite formation of 4-4-2 to a more attacking formation of 4-3-3.With Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo, eyes confirm starstuck liao."
- Gary, 04/08/07

Welcome to the new season with the curtain-raiser of the Community Shield match between Man Utd and Chelsea. I think no one is able to bear the off-season with weekends no soccer matches to see. Who would have predicted that Brazil and Iraq will be the winners of Copa America and Asian Cup respectively?

The fact that EPL is the most exciting league to watch is not uncalled for, as multi-national players gel as a team, and to win the fans. The league is getting harder to play as EPL have conquer the transfer market from all over the world, not just Europe.

The Community Shield is a repeat of last season's FA Cup Final. But with new signings, formation and injuries, history will find it very hard to repeat. In this curtain raiser, Man Utd and Chelsea have squared off 2 times since 1997 with each team win apiece. If this match goes to penalties, go for Man Utd. Ha ha, Wiki it and you will know why. But i doubt it will go to penalties.

With the new players signed so swiftly without battling an eyelid in the early weeks of the close season, all eyes will be on Carlos Tevez as he is signed just recently. And Fergie is going to change his favorite formation of 4-4-2 to a more attacking formation of 4-3-3. With Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo, eyes confirm starstuck liao.

Man Utd's Team News: Gary Neville, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Park Ji Sung are long term absentees. Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves, Louis Saha are out with injuries. Anderson, a new signing from Porto wont be featured. As for Nani, i expecting a second half cameo. Tevez will be in time for the League opener against Reading.

Chelsea's Team News: Wayne Bridge, Micheal Ballack are out of the game with injuries. Madrid-bound Robben is a doubt for the game. New signings like Steve Sidwell, Tal Ben Haim, Claudio Pizarro, Florent Malouda will be given a chance to feature.

Odds and Analysis: Level ball at 1.9, Man Utd are slight favourites in this match. Starting of the season, it is very hard to see their real strength. No bet for me.

With the new season starting in a week away, Starhub have announced a new soccer channel just for EPL 24 hours a day. And more matches are expected to shown live. Ihawk and I are still waiting for Voxeros confirmation about how the Prediction League is going to be, either we stick with the current 2 matches with 1 on Sat and 1 on Sun. Or the new one where we have 6 live matches to predict. Ha ha ha.
