SPUG EPL Prediction League - Match Weekend 03 - 04 Mar 2007

Ahhh... it's good to be at the top again as I await challengers for the lead this week.

Another big match-up this weekend as Liverpool host Manchester United. Good selection as it would mean predictions being split evenly into 3 camps. Hopefully, we get a big reshuffle in the table (sans me, of course :P ).

I'm sure Mourihno will be cheering on Benitez for this game as the Red Devils aim, at the very least, to maintain the 9-point lead. It could be more or if Chelsea cock up this week and handing the title over to ManUtd prematurely. Who knows?

Place your bets!

Midweek Preview: 27th February 2007

Manchester United vs Reading - FA Cup 5th round replay

"Manchester United never make it easy for themselves... we always do things the hard way." - Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex has repeated the above quote so often, it's practically a cliche by now. But most definitely, this is an apt way of summing up the upcoming FA Cup match against Reading. It evokes memories of the earlier Champions League group stages, when Man Utd had won their first three games and needed a single point to confirm advancement into the knockout rounds, but still decided they'd rather make life more difficult for themselves and their supporters and promptly lost the next two matches.

Similarly, instead of killing off this match the previous Saturday, Man Utd allowed Reading to sneak an equaliser then then, for 20 whole minutes after that, could not get that elusive second goal.

Now, I have the utmost respect for Reading. I really do. It's not easy for a newly-promoted team to impose themselves on the Premiership the way they have done, and they are now in a very respectable 6th position. But like I said before, a team of Man Utd's calibre should really be able to sweep Reading aside with nary an increase in heart rate. Instead, they huffed and they puffed but they couldn't blow Reading down.

Apparently, Man Utd are fielding a second-string team with a wary eye to the upcoming encounter against Lille in the Champions League (and boy, do I hope those sore losers get thrashed big-time). But didn't we do that last time and end up with a 1 - 1 draw? And didn't we have some big guns like Ronaldo, Carrick, Saha and Solskjaer and yet we still could not get the win?

To be very honest, our second-string team is probably not even on the same level as Arsenal's, as much as it pains me to say this. Arsenal's second-string went all the way to the Carling Cup finals. Man Utd's youngsters got dumped out in the second round (or was it third? I can't really remember). Our second-string, which consists of internationals who have already had several seasons' experience with us like John O' Shea, Darren Fletcher and Mikael Silvestre, are having problems just getting through the 5th round of the FA Cup.

Of course, it's no secret that Sir Alex's priority this season is the Premiership, and it is well-known that he wants another taste of European glory. But still, winning the oldest domestic cup competition in the world isn't exactly something embarrassing, plus it gives us a shot at another Treble or Double, at the very least.

Man to watch (Manchester United): I have no idea because goodness only knows who will be fielded tonight.

Man to watch (Reading): Leroy Lita. The kid is scoring goals like there's no tomorrow and undoubtedly is a major reason for their form this season.

Jaywalk's Encyclopaedia of Bookies' Odds says: Man Utd are giving 3/4 ball and 2.025 decimal odds to beat it. For the first time, I have no comment. Somehow, for this match, my mind seems to have hit a brick wall. Just play safe, and have fun.

The KING is back! Muahahahahaa!!

Great week for me as my haul of 8 points catapulted me back into pole position. My thanks to Cha Dum Yen for keeping my throne warm for me during my absence. :P

Congrats also to Cha Dum Yen, weiming, ianrush and TheSaint888 for hitting the century mark. Hope to see more hitting the 100-point milestone in weeks to come.

Weekend Outlook (24 Feb 2007)

Fulham vs Manchester United

"...As long as van der Sar can keep a clean sheet in the return leg (against Lille), we'd be through...."
- JayWalk, 24 Feb 2007

I would like to finally put the record straight that our Chinese import is Dong FangZhuo (董方卓) and not FangZhou or FangZou as many places in the media are misprinting.

Anyway, coming back to the midweek ECL review. We were lucky to come away with a win as well as a precious away goal.

While the French were protesting the legality of the goal, I have to say objectively that while it was not pretty, it was legit. It was a loophole in the rules. Still, it doesn't really matter if it was a win or otherwise, there weren't points to earn nor points to drop as we are in the knock-out phase. It all boils down to who score more goals over a stretch of 2 games, home and away. That's all. Away-goal rules will come into effect as a tie-breaker. So before, we starting jumping for joy in celebratory fashion, let me remind all that at this stage, we are merely 1 goal up. As long as van der Sar can keep a clean sheet in the return leg, we'd be through. Let's save the bubbly when we qualify in a fortnight's time.

I must say that the game was pretty tight and kudos to the French, sans all the crowd trouble and player whining, for putting up a good fight. Possession was even as were shots-on-goal, which if I may add, was severely limited.

JayWalk The Talk: Putting the past aside, as we look forward to the next game. ManUtd is about to enter a busy phase where we are going to get 2 games every week. Perhaps now, we are going to see more of Sheena right up to the end of the season.

Coming this Tuesday and we have a FA Cup replay away to Reading. A game, if I may add, was totally unnecessary, had we been able to seal up the game last Saturday.

As a result of this, I foresee us having to rotate players today. Tinkering managers like Ranieri and Houllier have taught us that messing with a winning combination would almost spell disaster and I really really hate to shuffle the team lineup unless absolutely necessary.

Get ready to see Park (Happy Birthday! 25 Feb) play in place of C.Ronaldo and Rooney switching places with Larsson at halftime. Solksjaer will be standing by for Saha but I doubt if Fergie will give the Babyface Assassin any time on the pitch today, barring any mishap.

Perhaps we have to thank our lucky stars that we are up against a relatively weaker opponent and their recent poor form is the proverbial cherry on top.

Coleman's sickbay isn't looking too good either with Queudrue, Elliot, Elrich, Bullard and Pembridge on the injured list while Montella is suspended for a Red Card for hitting out at Robbie Keane at the last game. Routledge is also doubtful pending his loan arrangement.

Head-to-head, and we have Fulham not won a single match against in the last 5. The only respectable scoreline was a 1-1 draw back in December 2004. Anyone still remember the 5-1 thumping as we open the season against them?

Fulham are draw specialists, tying Aston Villa for the most number of draws. A draw today would be Fergie's 200th draw as ManUtd gaffer.

JayWalk The Walk: The reward for a win today is more than just 3 points. It would allow us to pull 9 points ahead as Chelsea faces Arsenal in the Carling Cup final tomorrow. The 9-point cushion would aid us significantly from a psychological stand point as we will be traveling to Anfield to face Liverpool just before our ECL return leg against Lille at Old Trafford. It is going to be a tough and challenging period for us this coming few games and we are going to need all the help we can get.

Bookies give decimal odds of 1.85 for ManUtd to beat the 1-ball handicap. I don't see how ManUtd are going to be able to botch this. Even if we win by a single goal, we still won't lose the handicap bet.

ManUtd to give the 1-ball handicap.

Midweek Outlook (20 Feb 2007)

Lille vs Manchester United

"...I think Larsson will be on the bench for this one, after his snub of a contract extension...."
- JayWalk, 20 Feb 2007

We played with our first team against Reading's second and all we got was a miserable replay in a week's time as a result of half-hearted draw.

We have a good 14 against 4 shots-on-goal and all we managed was a single goal. Either the Reading keeper was really in top form that day or our boys' hearts just weren't in the game at all. I chose to believe that it was the latter.

Today's ECL game is just too much of a distraction. Everybody played on ginger footing, all afraid of picking up injuries which may otherwise jeopardise their participation in the coming ECL match or worse, the rest of the season.

Frankly, there are two ways to look at this. The glass half-empty would see this match as our missed opportunity to put the game away at home when we had the chance. An excellent chance if I may add, that was against a second stringer team. A replay means an extra, if not unnecessarily, game jammed into our already hectic schedule. Certainly, a full week of rest would have been better? So now, not only did we lose the precious down time, we also made our campaign more difficult by having the replay away from Old Trafford.

On the glass half-full front, we see that match as a save-up for today's game i.e. we will be at full strength, throwing everything we've got against Lille. Besides, we are still in the FA Cup, aren't we?

JayWalk The Talk: Edwin van der Sar got onto the flight on Monday which means that things are looking good in the goal keeping department. However, the fact that Heaton also got onto the flight means that van der Sar may not be 100% out of the woods just yet. We'll have to keep our fingers' crossed.

Other than that, we had the full squad on the plane and surely that must be a good sign. Scholes is currently the record holder of 28 yellow cards in the ECL and one more means suspension in our return leg at Old Trafford. Speaking of suspension, Rooney will be back in the Starting XI, after serving his suspension in the game against Reading last Saturday. Watch out for him to start up front with Saha as I think Larsson will be on the bench for this one, after his snub of a contract extension.

More good news for us is that Lille's recent form has been bad and sliding down the French Ligue 1 table steadily since the winter break. They have not won in their last 4 games, scoring just 1 miserly goal in 4.

Still, we have to factor in the superstition of the jinx as ManUtd's last victory against Lille was way back in 2001 in the ECL. We also failed to score against them last season during our two meetings, also in the ECL. Their defence is something we cannot underestimate.

Lille's home ground, Stade Lille-Metropole will not be hosting this match as it did not meet UEFA's standards i.e. Lille's home ground advantage has taken a slight dent, if at all. The alternative venue has been set to be in Lens' Stade Felix Bollaert but the latest report, this morning, indicated that it has also be declared unfit for training which led the ManUtd team to once again shift camp to Stade La Gayette. Perhaps a ploy on the French side to unsettle us, just like when FAM tried to mess everything up from the minute our Young Lions landed in Sepang airport during the Asean Cup semi-final?

So far, there has not be any announcement of a change in venue as far as the game is concerned. That leaves me to speculate that the pitch, while unfit now, would be ready for the game in time but I doubt if it would be "putting greenly" manicured. This is certainly going to count against us as our pampered boys are not used to pitch that are less than Rolls Royce's standards. Our defeat at the hands of FC Copenhagen, on a pitch that was Bruce Springsteen's concert the night before, was the very evidence of that.

Given that it is the end of winter, will our boys be used to soggy and lumpy pitch with inferior undersoil heating? Your guess will be as good as mine.

JayWalk The Walk: ManUtd has to give up 0.5 ball and a decimal odds of 1.975 to beat it. So much for confidence in the bookie camp. The deficit would have been more if not for the fact that

a) Lille has not lifted a trophy in 50 years;
b) Lille has not won a game in their last 4;
c) Lille will not exactly be playing on home turf.

But, there is this nagging lack of confidence on the side of ManUtd because:

a) ManUtd first XI, couldn't beat Reading second XI last Saturday.
b) ManUtd last 2 away European fixtures ended up in defeat.
c) ManUtd does not play with enough hunger lately. Complacency?

So how?

I doubt if ManUtd will be knocked out at this stage but I think ManUtd would be considered lucky to escape with a draw tonight.

Weekend Outlook (17 Feb 2007)

Manchester United vs Reading

"...would this the day that we finally see Dong FangZhou?..."
- JayWalk, 17 Feb 2007

We may have won our last game against Charlton comfortably, it was however, a game that I felt unsatisfied. Granted it was our 3rd clean sheet in a row and 4th victory on the trot since the Arsenal defeat. It was hardly convincing what we have on our hands is a team capable of greatness.

Granted all indicators point towards the league title but given our last performance, another ECL title may just be out of our reach.

Perhaps, our greatest enemy is complacency. No?

The old guards knew what it was like to be hungry but I am not sure if the next generations are as tough as the Squad of 1999.

C.Ronaldo is a tad too self-centered, Carrick has yet to prove the worth of his price tag. Park is just happy to run all over the place while Larsson doesn't really care if he gets another medal or not.

OK, OK, before I go overboard with the doom-saying, all is not lost. We have one person who can get everything to work together. Like a Swiss watch craftsman, Sir Alex Ferguson is one person who can piece every single gear (of all shapes and sizes) and assemble them in to a smooth running machinery of precision and mastery. If only some of these stupid gears would listen and do what they are told to do without acting all prima donna.

Anyway, the fact that this round of the FA Cup is held on a weekend in place of the regular EPL fixtures comes to show the importance of this round. However, with the second round of the ECL just a few days from now, the significance of the FA Cup has been severely undermined.

I won't be surprised if Fergie were to deploy fringe players for this round as well in order to rest key players ahead of our game against Lille (away).

JayWalk The Talk: Kuszczak will continue to man the goal posts today, with Heaton continue to enjoy his spell on the bench. van der Sar is expected to be ready for the Lille game on Tuesday but so far there hasn't been any positive news in the interim.

As mentioned earlier, Fergie should continue to play a second-string team today. Rooney is out on suspension but we should see C.Ronaldo getting some work-out on the field having just recovered from a viral flu.

Now the question that has been on my mind for the longest time, would this the day that we finally see Dong FangZhou (or FangZhuo?)?

Speaking of deploying fringe players, Steve Coppell has made it known that he too, intend to play a second string team today. What I don't get is that with no mid-week commitment, why would Reading need to rest key players?

Anyway, we should see Kevin Doyle back from injury while Duberry and Halford are cup tied. Goalie Federici will be making his debut for Reading and how unfortunate considering the fact that he will be facing Saha and Larsson up front.

JayWalk The Walk: Many have known that I have been a long time admirer of Curbishley, Redknapp and Allardyce. Now add Coppell to the list. What Coppell has done with Reading is remarkable. On a shoestring budget, he has managed to take the newly promoted club to a lofty height of 6th and a credible shot at the UEFA Cup next season. All these without breaking the bank and what Coppell has done is good for English football as most of his players are mostly British.

On any given day with regards to the FA Cup, I would have sided with Reading given that ManUtd have always use this tournament as an opportunity to bleed new players. However, now that Coppell has also indicated that he intends to do the same, I am not so confident anymore about the boys in the blue-and-white stripes. They were very spirited in their last 2 EPL clash against ManUtd but let us not forget that Reading played with the first team on those 2 occasions. I am not so sure if their second team is anywhere nearly as good.

Bookies has a decimal odds of 2.05 for ManUtd to beat the 1.5-ball deficit. What many folks don't know is that Reading has won all their last 10 handicaps and it seems like the trend may continue for quite a while unless ManUtd is able to break the jinx today.

Granted this may be a game between second teams, it doesn't mean that ManUtd will be all over Reading. While I think we should be able to advance to the next round comfortably, but there is not guarantee of a goal-fest which -1.5 balls seems to suggest.

Still, I think ManUtd can beat the 1.5-ball deficit, but only just.

The inevitable has finally happened as we have a new leader this week.

Kudos to Cha_Dum_Yen for taking the lead, dropping me to Joint-2nd with ianrush whom the latter had an astounding 9-point haul.

Sorry to hear Apollo and Necroastr's submissions going missing but as anyone who uses Blogger/Blogspot would tell you, this is not uncommon. It pays to double check to see if your predictions has gone through after you click "Submit".

Also, I've checked through my email (I've set to have each and every Blogspot comment to email me a notification) but I have not seen either submission. Sorry

Weekend Outlook (10 Feb 2007)

Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic

"...(I) reckoned that we should need another 6 victories from our last 12 games to seal the title..."
- JayWalk, 10 Feb 2007

There is something conflicting in the stats during the last game against Spurs at White Hart Lane. The possession %, shots attempted and shots on-goal were very close but yet the 4-0 scoreline just doesn't tally up well.

That calls for a closer look at the Shots Map and we can see that the game started off relatively sluggish and we see most of Spurs' shot attempts were relatively long range wishful thinking.

The lone red dot in the first half belonged to C.Ronaldo's penalty conversion which I must speak out against.

It was a dive. No question about it.

We don't need to win games in this fashion. Even without this goal, the revised 3-0 scoreline would not have altered the headlines the next day. Blind faithfuls would, right about now, jump in to the Portuguese player's defence saying that there is psychological advantage entering the changing room at half-time with a goal advantage. I say screw that. I rather drop points than to win games in such a disgraceful fashion.

This certainly speak volumes of C.Ronaldo's integrity and I won't be surprised if the young lad ditch us at the end of season to chase the money bait, rumoured to be laid out by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

I won't deny that C.Ronaldo is a talented player with a very very impressive set of skills, but like Rivaldo, he will only be a good player as his integrity, or rather the lack of, would prevent him to elevate further to that of being a great player.

Coming back to the Spurs-ManUtd game, the game certainly did pick up in the second half as both teams starting to find their respective rhythm and shift up into high gear. Both teams had close shots in the penalty box but yet ManUtd managed to convert 3 of them while Spurs managed none.

Why? Spurs self-destructing again?

Probably, but I would think that the answer lies with one man. Edwin van der Sar. He was absolutely fantastic that day and it was a pity to have his nose broken by an over-zealous Robbie Keane. Nothing malicious there. Just plain unlucky.

Looking ahead, the month of February will be an exciting one with the second stage of the European Champions League starting right after our 5th Round FA Cup game at home to Reading. Mark the weekend of 24-25 February on your calendar for it is an important date for ManUtd. Chelsea will be playing Arsenal for the Carling Cup that Sunday and 24 hours before that, we will have the chance at Craven Cottage to pull 9 points ahead, assuming no mishap from ManUtd nor Chelsea today.

As we are fast approaching the season's run in, I was prompted into looking at the league table closer. I made a mental calculation and reckoned that we should need another 6 victories from our last 12 games to seal the title. If we are able to continue to steam-roll over our opponents, we should even be able to wrap up the title even before we play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 15 Apr 2007.

JayWalk The Talk: van der Sar is out with a broken nose and that means that Kuszczak will be between the sticks today with Heaton on the bench. As an added precaution, expect Fergie to feature Ferdinand on the pitch and have him double as the standby "third keeper". That being the case, then congratulations to Rio Ferdinand for this 200th ManUtd game.

Afternote: My mistake here as it was O'Shea who donned the green jersey after van der Sar got escorted off the pitch. Still, Ferdinand still get to start in the next game while O'Shea was rested.

Another good news would be that of Rooney fit again to start today, after a swift recovery from a minor ankle injury picked up during the earlier Spurs game.

The picture is not as rosy at the Charlton's end with the Addicks stucked in 19th spot. A win, albeit unlikely, still won't get them out of the relegation zone. Morale is low in the Pardew camp.

The only player worth watching out for in the Charlton side is Darren Bent but don't expect much from him today as he returns to the pitch after a 6-week layoff due to a knee problem. Bougherra will be making his debut for Charlton in place of El Karkouri who is suspended. With a calf problem and still in the process of assimilating into the Charlton team, Bougherra has certainly picked a wrong time to make his Charlton debut.

Song, on loan from Arsenal, will also be making his debut today. The way I see it, both debutants are being thrown directly into the deep end of the pool today.

I think both of them will drown.

JayWalk The Walk: Mark Riley will be the referee for this game and that would probably mean that decisions will be slightly skewed in our favour, if the rumour holds true.

Charlton is one game short of 900 post-war league victories but bookie's 2-goal handicap and a decimal odds of an even 1.95 for ManUtd to overcome the deficit means Charlton will be stuck at 899 until next week.

I would expect to see C.Ronaldo getting onto the scoresheet via diving or otherwise, as he is currently tied with Drogba for the lead for the Golden Boot award at 15 goals apiece as of today.

Giggs will be another player anxious to put the ball in the net as he currently stands at 97 league goals. A hat-trick will finish the game nicely for him with a milestone century of goals.

Verdict? With ManUtd chalking up 9 goals-over in the last 10 games. Expect a bloodbath at Old Trafford. I say give the 2-goal handicap and pick up your winnings when the whistle blows 90 minutes later.

SPUG EPL Prediction League - Match Weekend 10 - 11 Feb 2007

After quite a few weeks of matches involving the big clubs, let us turn our attention to the smaller ones as they are just as important to the league as any other clubs.

Benitez should know this better than anyone after calling Everton a "smaller club" and ended being held to a goaless draw on home soil. Hah!

Ok, without further ado, here's this week's games.

SPUG EPL Prediction League - Match Weekend 03 - 04 Feb 2007

I'm back from the US and was glad to see my lead not only intact but extended by an additional point. Still a 2-point lead doesn't amount to much as it can be easily overhauled at the snap of a finger.

Still, one point more is always better than one point less.

Kudos to Apollo for his massive 7-point haul propelling him into the Top 10. Well done!

Weekend Preview: 4th February 2007

Manchester United vs Tottenham

"So I was wrong about the last match... doesn't mean I'll be wrong again." - Sheena

My powers must be failing. In the previous match against Watford, I predicted that Manchester United would win, but by not more than 2 goals, and that they would leak goals in the final 10 minutes.

In the end, United won 4 - 0.

It wasn't exactly a totally breathtaking display of attacking flair; but it was still a comprehensive and efficient win by any standards. This is just the boost the team will need in order to be up for the challenge of Tottenham tonight. Manchester United may have won in their past 5 visits to White Hart Lane, but as I recall Tottenham never made it easy for us.

Martin Jol recently publicly admitted that the team missed Michael Carrick, and indeed, looking at their inconsistent performances this season (losing against the likes of Everton and Bolton but winning against Chelsea), that may well be the case. However, their performances and their 11th position in the league table belie their capabilities and the undoubted talent in their ranks. Surely a team that boasts England number 1 Paul Robinson, Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane, and Dimitar Berbatov can do better than that.

On the other hand, Sir Alex also has a wealth of talent at this disposal and a fully-fit squad, with Louis Saha back for tonight's match. Rooney is firing on all cylinders and as usual Cristiano Ronaldo has been dazzling. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have struck up a great partnership and so have Carrick and Paul Scholes. Indeed, so much of the accolades heaped on the team has been directed at Rooney and Ronaldo that it is easy to miss the contribution of our two central midfielders who have been tirelessly pulling the strings.

Plus, after Chelsea's win against Charlton last night, Man Utd's lead at the top of the table has been cut to a precarious 3 points, and the team will want to do all they can to increase their lead back to 6 points again.

Matches against Spurs have always been interesting affairs, and even though previous fixtures have been low-scoring (and I suspect today's will be too) they are never dull. Having said that, Spurs will not be able to stop Manchester United tonight. But it will be fun watching them try.

Man to watch (Tottenham Hotspur): Dimitar Berbatov. The striker has been a revelation at the Lane with 6 goals and 7 assists to his name. Good aerially and on the ground, the Man Utd defenders will have their hands full with him and the speedy Jermain Defoe.

Man to watch (Manchester United): I'm going to go with Michael Carrick for this one. It's his first visit back to the Lane since his move to Man Utd and we all know how players tend to get more fired up against old clubs. Anyway, he has been performing amazingly well over the past few months, but so quietly that we almost don't see it. Be prepared to truly see it tonight.

Jaywalk's Encyclopaedia of Bookies' Odds says: Man Utd are giving 0.5 ball with 1.80 to beat. Those are some good odds for punters. I don't see any other result for this other than a Man Utd win, and they simply need to win by one goal.

Disclaimer: The above views are purely my own two-cents' worth. In other words, I cannot and will not guarantee that my predictions are accurate. If you want to bet on the game, do so at your own risk. Also, please bet responsibly and within your means regardless of how "sure thing" that game may appear to be. As the old saying goes, "The Ball Is Round". Good luck.

Note: Goddamn it, I was wrong again. But still... another 4 - 0 win! Hurray!
